The North Tyneside Educational Psychology Service is a highly skilled team of Educational Psychologists (EPs), all of whom are registered with The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and compliant with their standards of proficiency.
Our team’s knowledge and understanding of educational and psychological research promotes the use of evidence-based practice to ensure social and emotional well-being and academic progress across the ability range in our children and young people aged 0 to 25 years.
Working with North Tyneside Educational Psychology Service will bring about the following positive outcomes in your school:
- Special educational needs will be identified, assessed and communicated to all relevant parties. The education psychology team’s approach ensures that Pupil voice and parental voice will be evident in assessment, intervention, reporting and evaluation.
- Staff’s understanding of the statutory duties placed upon schools by Special educational needs and disability (SEND) legislation and local SEND processes and pathways will be improved.
- Staff will gain knowledge of current educational / psychological research and North Tyneside’s Local Offer through regular consultation with a link Educational Psychologist. (SLA hours can also be used to commission high quality training on a wider range of SEND themes.)
- A strengthened graduated approach to SEND and mental health support as a result of consultative support, systemic approaches and staff training.
- In the event of a critical incident or bereavement, up to 6 hours of EP support / intervention can be provided within the first 48 hours. Any additional support / intervention, beyond the initial 6 hours, will need to be commissioned via the EPS SLA.
What does our service provide?
Psychological support can be delivered to pupils, staff, parents/carers:
- Special educational needs (SEN) assessments to identify strengths and barriers to progress and attainment
- SEN support planning and review
- Exam arrangement assessments
- Psychotherapeutic intervention
All pupil work is likely to involve some or all of the following:
- Consultation with the child or young person, their parent(s) / carer(s) and any other relevant key professionals who are known to the child
- Observation of the child or young person in one or more setting
- Face to face assessment
- Intervention planning
- Delivery of a psychotherapeutic intervention
- Attendance at SEND review, annual EHCP review and/or Team Around the Family or Early Help Assessment meeting to share assessment findings and contribute to collaborative SEND support planning
- Drafting of a report detailing assessment findings, recommended classroom strategies / SEND provision and any agreed actions. Reports will be distributed within 4 school weeks of the date of last involvement.
Examples of individual staff support:
- One to one staff supervision and/or psychological support
- Assistance with action research
- Assistance with developing and delivery staff training / parent workshops
- Assistance with drafting SEND policies and documentation.
Examples of group work
- Psycho-education e.g. managing anxiety; social media and psychological wellbeing; developing peer mediation
- Circle of Friends intervention to manage peer group conflict and develop social skills
- Mindfulness programmes to foster emotional regulation
- Friends for Life (endorsed by WHO) to improve low mood and reduce anxiety
- Group Theraplay®
- Group Thrive®
Short-term intervention for pupils who have experienced bereavement and loss - Managing exam stress and study skills
- Psycho-education e.g. Importance and power of sleep; social media and psychological well being
- Bespoke group interventions can be developed in accordance with need
- Bespoke parent workshops
- Supervisory group support for staff e.g. Solution circles.
Examples of whole school or partnership work
- Development of restorative practice and relationship based policies
- Development of trauma informed approaches
- Auditing, evaluating and developing a school’s graduated approach to SEND inclusion
- Systematic evaluation of any school-based intervention
- Support with co-ordinating in-house action research
- Appreciative Inquiry in order to explore school systems and approaches
- Support systems change by facilitating action planning using tools such as Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope (PATH)
- Gathering, collating and analysing parent / pupil / staff views to inform school development activity
- Rapid response critical incident or bereavement support.
- Development and delivery of bespoke face to face and/or online training for staff /parents.
