North Tyneside Sensory Service is a specialist education support service for children and young people with hearing and / or vision impairment
We exist to provide the highest quality of educational support for children and young people with hearing and / or vision impairment from diagnosis to adulthood.
Through our involvement, we aim to maximise the educational potential of children and young people with sensory impairment, providing effective early intervention, ongoing specialist support, training for schools and settings and the application of specialist equipment
How do we achieve this?
We work within the family home, early years settings and all schools and academies to take a collaborative approach, with all professionals involved with the hearing or visually impaired child soon after a medical diagnosis
We employ fully qualified specialist teachers and support staff who have extensive knowledge and skills in working with Children and young people with sensory impairment
What does our service provide?
Core Offer (Free of charge to settings)
- Individual specialist teaching from a qualified teacher of the deaf / visual impairment
- Mobility and Independence support
- Touch typing tuition
- Maintenance and upkeep of specialist equipment
- Environmental adjustments
- Provide settings with specialist training, advice and consultancy
- Build schools’ capacity
- Independent living skills / travel training
- Specialist assessments
- Work in partnership with NHS / Parents and carers
- Provide opportunities for social inclusion
Non-core offer
(Charged to settings, usually funded via EYIF / EHCP funding)
- Specialist learning support from a Specialist Teaching Assistant
